week 3 discussion is done in JING if it is ok.
Marcus Owens week 3 discussion 1 What evidence did you see and hear by watching Mr. Pronovost Differentiating Instruction Through Interactive Games that supports what has been learned thus far regarding setting & communicating learning objectives, using the gradual release model, giving feedback, and assessment? I like how he basically gave the students a quick formative assessment at the beginning of the video asking the students if the understood the key terms in solving word problems in math for addition and subtraction. After that he explain what objectives of the day was for the students and the technology they were using by setting up a reward system. If they got 80% correct they can move on to some different technology. The operating system of the games he was using gave the students consist feedback on what they were learning. The gradual release is when the students play the game. How does he specifically structure his lesson to incorporate technology? How does using technology promote differentiation? His lesson plan integrate technology right after he give the students a formative assessment on the terms they will encounter on some of the games they will play to solve word problems. The technology promoted differentiation by providing the students with the opportunity of using touch screen voice activated programs that every type of learner can benefit from. Each student benefited from meeting their individual needs by playing the games and progressing in the games to reach different levels. What evidence is there of varying levels of cognition? Identify the levels of Depth of Knowledge (DOK) you observed students reaching during the various stages of the lesson. The video demonstrates the recall and reproduction of what the students will be learning from the beginning of the video the students was basically doing written work and having a discussion with their teacher. Reproduction came from playing the games planet turtle. Skill and concepts and short-term strategic thinking is integrating into the games the play starting with the hidden turtle games and as the teacher explained they can use paper, finger and anything else they need to reach the answer to the problems they are doing. And when they reach dream-box they are working on their own level versus when they on planet turtle is just age appropriate. Extended thinking is also when they reach the dream-box as the data is being recorded in the programs they are using on the systems or games they are playing. How do you believe this type of learning environment makes students feel about their capabilities with math? Why? I believe that the environment is not to over stimulating and positive for the student. Technology has weaved its way into the fabric of our daily lives so including technology into the classroom is only right, learning through the use of games is not a bad idea because the students was engaged and motivated to interact in the lessons.
